Happy holidays everyone! 2020 is mysterious yet alluring for the American numismatists. The U.S. mint is holding its cards close to its chest and hasn’t revealed all the new coins that it is planning to release as of now. The Product schedule for now shows us the coins with dates till March 2020 and then a general season-wise (till Fall 2020) line-up of the other coins. We know that there is one commemorative coin for ‘Basketball hall of Fame’ and a special version of the coin for kids.

Like we do every year @CSN blog, this post unveils the coins being released in 2020, and their design.

2020 Commemorative coin – “Basketball Hall of Fame coins”

Basketball was born in 1891 as an alternative to football due to the cold winters of New England. James Naismith a high-school gym teacher from YMCA in Massachusetts invented this indoor game to keep his team active when they couldn’t play football outside. In 1959, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was established to honor and celebrate the game and its creator in the city it was born.

The Basketball Hall of Fame coins will be released in 2020 to mark the 60th anniversary of the creation of the ‘Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’. The coins will be released in three versions; $5 Gold coin, Silver Dollar coin and Clad Half Dollar coin. The obverse design features three players reaching for the ball in unison, reflecting how the sport of basketball has brought together diverse people around the world. The reverse design depicts a basketball about to pass through the net.

American Innovation $1 coins

The U.S. mint would be releasing the four 2020 American Innovation $1 coins and a Reverse Proof version of the New Jersey coin from 2019 next year. 2020 will see the release of coins for Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, and South Carolina.

The Connecticut coin would be depicting the Gerber variable scale used to increase a geometric shape by 200%. It was invented by H. Joseph Gerber. The recommended design for the Massachusetts coin is a representation of the dial of an early rotary phone invented by Alexander Graham Bell. An alternate design could be the depiction of the ‘slam dunk’ in basketball as Massachusetts is considered the birthplace of basketball in the U.S. For Maryland the recommended design depicts the ‘Hubble telescope’, one of the largest and most versatile space telescopes in the world. South Carolina has two design recommendations; one the Civil rights activist Septima Poinsette Clark marching with three young African American students carrying books and the other showing Clark teaching at a blackboard. We will talk about the final designs for the American Innovation coins in the coming posts @CSN blog.

2020 America the Beautiful quarters

The coins celebrate the National Park of American Samoa, Connecticut’s Weir Farm National Historic Site, U.S. Virgin Islands’ Salt Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, Vermont’s Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park and Kansas’s Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. CSN blog will have detailed posts later in the year for each of the coins.

Other coins

The theme of the 2020 Native American $1 Coin design is Elizabeth Peratrovich and Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Law. The design features a portrait of Elizabeth Peratrovich, whose advocacy was considered a deciding factor in the passage of the 1945 Anti-Discrimination Law in the Alaskan territorial government. The foreground features a symbol of the Tlingit Raven moiety, of which she was a member. The mint will also be releasing regular coins like the American Eagle dollar, Kennedy Half dollar, and the American Buffalo.

The U.S. mint has started releasing different and exciting coins over the last few years with different kinds of proof finishes and shapes. The coming year would also see some exciting finishes, shapes, colorization and the works. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a great year for all numismatists!
