The 1909 Lincoln cent was minted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Designed by Lithuanian immigrant sculptor Victor D. Brenner, the original coin featured his initials "V.D.B" prominently at the bottom of the reverse. This design element faced widespread criticism in the newspapers of the time, prompting the Mint to remove the initials. From the latter part of 1909 until 1918, the designer's initials were absent from the Lincoln cent. In 1918, they were discreetly reintroduced on the bottom truncation of Lincoln's bust. Before their removal, 27,995,000 of the 1909 "VDB" Lincoln cents were struck.
