Edith Kanakaʻole (1913–1979), affectionately known as "Aunty Edith," was a celebrated Native Hawaiian educator, composer, chanter, and kumu hula, or master teacher of traditional Hawaiian dance. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly to preserve Hawaiian language, cultural practices, and ancestral knowledge for future generations. As a teacher at Hawaiʻi Community College and the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, she helped bring traditional Hawaiian studies into higher education, ensuring that centuries-old customs and knowledge would continue to thrive.
The quarter's remarkable reverse design, created by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Emily Damstra and sculpted by Medallic Artist Renata Gordon, beautifully captures Kanakaʻole's connection to her homeland. Her flowing hair and traditional lei poʻo transform into elements of the Hawaiian landscape, symbolizing the inseparable relationship between Hawaiian culture and the natural world. The inscription "E hō mai ka ʻike," meaning "granting the wisdom," reflects the important role of traditional chants and hula in preserving Hawaiian history and knowledge.
Adding another dimension to this collection are the distinctive Stephanie Sabin signature labels. Sabin joined PCGS in 2006 and held several important leadership positions, including overseeing international operations, before becoming President in 2021. Her signature adds a special numismatic connection to these professionally certified coins.
With all three mintmarks represented, matching PCGS MS66 grades, First Day of Issue designations, and special presidential signature labels, this impressive collection celebrates the enduring legacy of Edith Kanakaʻole while offering collectors a distinctive piece of American numismatic history.
