Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962) redefined the role of First Lady during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency from 1933 to 1945. A tireless champion of civil rights, women's rights, and humanitarian causes, she continued her public service long after leaving the White House. The coin's powerful reverse design, created by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Don Everhart and sculpted by Medallic Artist Craig A. Campbell, depicts Eleanor Roosevelt alongside the scales of justice against a backdrop of the globe. These symbolic elements recognize her extraordinary contributions to advancing human rights around the world.
