The denarius was a silver Roman coin that was introduced during the time of the Roman Republic around 211 B.C. and continued to be used for over 400 years. SPQR is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase Senatus Populusque Romanus, which translates to The People and Senate of Rome. This phrase, used to describe the Roman Republic – a government of the people – first appears in inscriptions around 80 BC. The Romans continued to use SPQR even after the Roman Republic fell. SPQR was displayed on many different mediums across the empire, including monuments and coins. It was ultimately phased out during the reign of Constantine the Great as part of an effort to spread Christianity across the largely pagan Roman Empire.
