Originally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle is celebrated as one of the world's most iconic coins and widely regarded as the most beautiful in U.S. history. However, Saint-Gaudens' initial concept was far more ambitious. His original design envisioned Lady Liberty as a majestic figure with angelic wings, crowned with a Native American headdress suggested by Roosevelt, rather than the traditional Phrygian cap. The reverse featured a completely different design, showcasing a regal eagle perched on an olive branch. Both sides of the coin were intended to be struck in ultra-high relief.

Unfortunately, practical challenges in minting forced significant changes to the design. The relief was reduced, Liberty's wings and headdress were removed, and the reverse was replaced with an eagle in flight. Saint-Gaudens, weakened by illness, was unable to oppose these modifications and passed away in 1907, never witnessing his altered design enter circulation.

To honor his legacy, the National Park Foundation later authorized commemorative "Winged Liberty" coins. John Mercanti, the retired 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, was tasked with completing the sculpture using Saint-Gaudens' original plasters preserved at the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, New Hampshire. In 2016, over a century after his passing, Saint-Gaudens' vision was finally realized.

Now, in 2024, this extraordinary coin has returned in a stunning new edition. Produced by the renowned Commonwealth Mint and refined by Jody Clark, Chief Engraver of the Commonwealth Mint and designer of the final definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the 2024 NPF 2oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Winged Liberty features the highest relief ever in the series—Ultra High Relief. This edition restores missing elements from the 2016 version, including stars encircling Liberty, and boasts a Roman finish, a blend of polished and matte proof finishes described as “polished frosted.”

Each 2024 NPF 2oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Winged Liberty is graded a perfect SP 70 by NGC and comes encased with an exclusive label hand-signed by John Mercanti. With a limited mintage of just 1,999 pieces—only 590 certified as First Day of Issue—this coin is a rare and exquisite tribute to the visionary artist whose work was truly ahead of its time. Don't miss your chance to own this masterpiece!
