The S.S. Central America set sail on September 3, 1857 from the Gulf of Panama to New York City with 500 passengers, and $1,595,497.13 in Gold Treasure. The gold on board the S.S. Central America originally left from San Francisco California, on the S.S. Sonora two weeks earlier. Included in this Treasure: freshly minted 1857-S Double Eagles, Gold bar/dust, and nuggets, and silver coins. The largest gold bar recovered was a solid brick that weighed 933 ounces, nearly 80 pounds! Unfortunately, the S.S. Central America ran into a horrendous hurricane and sank off the coast of North Carolina on Saturday September 12, 1857.
The California Gold Rush all started at Sutter’s Mill near Coloma California, on January 24, 1848. James W. Marshall, a partner of John Sutter discovered a small nugget and gold dust while working on the mill. This discovery started the largest mass migration in American history bringing over 300,000 people to California in the next several years. The peak of the gold rush was reached by 1853 and was practically over by 1858. Many made a fortune, but many more simply just survived and went back to work in shops and on the farm. There was 750,000 pounds of gold extracted during the ten year gold rush, and a large portion was shipped east to the large banks in New York City, where the story of The S.S. Central America began.
In 1988 after a three year search, the S.S. Central America was finally located on the sea floor at about 8,000 feet, off the coast of North Carolina. The following year The Columbus-America Discovery Group began the recovery of the treasure. Phase I of the recovery finished in 1992. Phase II began many years later in April, 2014. A total of 15,500 gold and silver coins were found in Phase II, including the ship’s safe. This was full of intact bags of genuine “California Gold Dust”.
