Uncirculated Coins with US Proof Coin Sets
United States Coin Proof Sets are excellent beginning sets for new collectors and a stunning addition to any collection. A proof set is the whole collection of proof coins produced each year in each denomination. Proof coins have a unique cameo impression because they are struck in sharp relief with frosted, sculpted foregrounds and mirror-like backgrounds. They are in and of themselves collector's items.
From 1936 to 1954, the proof coins were housed in cardboard boxes. Proof Sets were stored in clear cellophane containers known as flat packs starting in 1955. Rather than being polished, the early proof coins were known as matte proof coins because of their grainy surfaces. Individual coins were issued between 1908 and 1916. In 1921 and 1922, a few silvers dollar matte proofs were also made available.
Regular United states Proof Sets
Five-coin proof sets were made after 1936. They continued to strike until 1942, when the Second World War forced a halt to production. Resuming in 1950, it lasted until 1972. The dollar was added in 1973 and the state quarters that were created annually were added in the proof sets from 1999 to 2008. The presidential coins and other commemorative coins were also included in later proof sets. The U.S. Mint began issuing silver proof sets in 1992. Ninety percent of silver coins are included in these sets.
